Support Families

Are you a homeowner? Coles County Habitat for Humanity could use your experience in helping mentor new homeowner families as they prepare to take on the responsibilities of maintaining a home.

The role of a Support Team is especially important in helping Habitat families through the process of acquiring their first home. If you are a homeowner yourself, perhaps you remember how important it was to have trusted advisors when you purchased your first home. The families selected for Habitat homes often do not have the support system many of us are privileged to have. The Support Team is there to assist them in learning about becoming homeowners. Please consider offering your help by getting involved in this role with Habitat.

Support Team are volunteers who assist the homeowner family with the many decisions needed during the process of building a home (e.g., selection from options for floor plans, colors, accessories), while advising them on the many aspects of responsible home ownership. The Support Team also serve as a liaison between the Habitat affiliate and the homeowner family, helping track the volunteer hours logged by the homeowner family and friends toward the required number of "sweat equity" hours. They assist the new homeowners in developing plans for the groundbreaking and the house blessing, as well as other opportunities for interaction with the media. The responsibilities of the Support Team continue until approximately one year after the family has moved into their new home.

There is no financial obligation in becoming a part of a Support Team. Individuals selected for Support Teams will receive training and guidance from the Habitat affiliate prior to assuming their responsibilities. Coles County Habitat for Humanity would like to develop a cadre of individuals interested in serving as Support Teams so we will have ample time for training and helping you learn about your role. You may volunteer your time this year or perhaps sometime in the future, but in the meantime, we would like to know that you're interested.
